Top sports index
Flemish Olympic top sports index at highest level ever
In 2019, the Flemish Olympic top sports index reached its highest level ever. There has been a spike in this index since 2012. Points for the index are earned through medals and top 8 places at the Olympic Games, European and World Championships in Olympic disciplines.
The bi-community top sports index also increased from 2015. This index covers disciplines with athletes from both communities, such as 4x400 metres in athletics.
The Walloon top sports index has shown a lesser increase in recent years.
Flemish Paralympic top sport index never higher
By analogy with the Olympic top sports index, the Paralympic top sports index is calculated for the Paralympic disciplines.
The Flemish Paralympic top sports index has never been this high. In 2019 the index was even slightly higher than in 2018.
The bicommunal Paralympic top sport index also rose between 2018 and 2019 and reached a new record high.
Top sports index (Olympic or Paralympic): a result index is calculated for each sport based on all the medals and places in the final (top 8) gained at Olympic or Paralympic Games or World Games, World Championships and European Championships. Equivalent international competitions are also taken into account (e.g. Fed Cup, Davis Cup and Grand Slam tennis tournaments, Masters and World Cup matchplay golf). Only the results of the seniors category of disciplines on the Flemish top sports list are taken into account (so no hockey, figure skating, weightlifting, short-track, etc.).
